News Letters

Hi guys.

  • Thanks to everyone that made it the meeting Wednesday. The next meeting is in Z6 208 this coming Wednesday May 28th at 2pm. Below is a recap on the thing we discussed in the last meeting and a couple of new things to think about at the end.

 Recap...

  • Meeting Time
  • We decided to wait till the Class Allocation opened for Semester 2 and look for the best day in the week for a meeting between 11am - 12pm or between 12pm - 1pm (please email your two preferences to the secretary). Once the best day is known we can arrange our timetables around keeping that time slot free. Class allocations for Creative Industries open Wednesday June 4th at 10am.

  • Script Talk
  • A new forum topic will be appear soon on www.brisfilm.com called "Script Talk" in which can post our scripts and discuss them, with the aim to get everyone interested in making your project. I have posted a script under "off the topic" just to get the ball rolling but I will move it as soon as the new forum topic exists.
  • Please, if you are going to post a script make sure that it is clearly marked private and confidential and copyrighted. Plus remove your personal contact details from the front page and perhaps put C/O FTVS - see postal address below. People will of course be able to contact you via the website and so keep spamming to a minimum.

  • Student Film Screening
  • The Society has decided to have a student film screening night hopefully on Friday July 25th, so pencil that date in to your diaries. We are looking into potential venues with preference going to the Garden's Point Guild Bar. Ideas to promote this event have included posters, emails, getting into periodicals such as Inside QUT and Universe, and with a trailer or short ad which we can hopefully have screened at the beginning of next semester's lectures, and from the projectors in the CI Precinct.
  • At the next meeting we will be further discussing the making of this trailer; how long it should be, what equipment we have access to via FTVS members and what we need apply for via ELC, presentation ideas, clips from films to include in the trailer, dates for producing the trailer in the break, what crew roles are required and who is interested in taking part, etc.
  • We are also looking for someone interested in creating a poster to advertise the event.
  • In relation to venue, the GP Guild Bar certainly seems to be available for our use. We can book half the space for free, but if we want the whole space we will be looking at a fee for security. More information about this will be coming soon.
  • Above all, please keep an eye out for potential content for the screening. If you have a film you want to show or if you know of someone else who might, please get the word out. The screening format is likely to include time to say a few words about your film if you want to, those who donate a film will be rewarded in some way, such as with a couple of tickets to the event or with a free beer. Also is is important to note that films will be returned to their owners in good condition, and will not be used for any other purposes than this screening without prior consent. We are looking for approximately 2 hours worth of good content with filler material either side.

  • Member Cards
  • At the last meeting, the suggestion was made of creating member cards where to holder could receive discounts at a variety of businesses. Ideas for places we might apply for discounts include; the Guild lolly shop, Fats Studios or Sony Central for tapes etc, the Dendy or other cinemas for tickets, The Production shop in Woolloongabba, and so on.
  • If you want to have a go at designing what this card may look like, please do. We will also need to draft a cover letter and discuss who, how and where the Society should apply for discounts, and how and where we should get the card made.

  • Chocolate Drive
  • As suggested by one of our members, a chocolate drive is often a good way of raising funds - funds which will eventually find their way into your extra curricular films. Sherlyn has done some preliminary research to discover that both Cadbury and Mars can supply fundraising kits and both can possible send a consultant to one of our future meetings to breif us on what we need to know. If you have any personal experience with this method of fund raising please let yourself be known at the next meeting or drop one of the exec an email - see addresses at the bottom of the page.

 And the new stuff...

  • Logo
  • With posters, member cards and trailers in the making, it is about time that the FTVS had a logo. Unfortunately it seems that the logo proposed last year has disappeared with its maker so its time to start anew. If you have an idea, please make a sketch, jpg, psd or image in whatever format you like and bring it along or email it to an exec.  The most appropriate image can then be adopted as the FTVS logo and we may even reward your efforts somehow (tickets to the screening, beer at the bar, bag or sweets, who knows). Even if your image doesn't get chosen as the logo, rumour has it that the Guild have a badge maker which we can use and create your great pictures into badges.

  • Website Polls
  • As you will have noticed www.brisfilm.com frequently has a new poll to keep things interesting on the site. A poll usually consist of 1 question with 5 answer options. You are able to go back and have a look at old polls and vote on them too if you haven't already. Do you have a poll question to put forward? Please email your question and answer options to one of the exec to have it posted.

  • Guild Affiliation
  • Hooray! The FTVS is finally affiliated with the Guild. This is great news because we once again have access to our funds plus a whole host of facilities including BBQs, marquees, and badge makers, plus we are now able to use Guild venues such as the Guild Bars, and arrange discounted catering for events.
  • As a condition of our affiliation we need to participate in Market Week - this is week one of semester two. The FTVS now has a table booked for Gardens Point on July 15th, and Kelvin Grove on July 16th both between 10am and 3pm.  If you are available to volunteer manning our stall on one or both of these days please let yourself be known.
  • At some point in the not too distant future the guild will be holding a BBQ training day. Without this training we wont be able to use the BBQs, but with this training the society can put forward people to help at Guild sausage sizzles and earn money from the guild for the society, plus we can have our own fund raising sausage sizzles. Stay tuned for more details.

  • Looks like we have plenty to keep our hands full for now. We look forward to seeing you at the next meeting in Z6 208 this coming Wednesday May 28th at 2pm.

 (Posted 23/5/2008) (Updated 29/5/2008)

  • Hi guys,
  • Just a recap of what happened in the last meeting on Wed 28th May. But firstly, we had a few new members attend the meeting on Wednesday - so, hello to you!!!

  • Third Year Projects:
  • John Davies, a third year Fine Arts FTV student, came to the meeting to see if anyone was interested in assisting on the set of some of the third year productions. As I beleive, quite a lot of people wrote their names down to help out. John said they were looking for people to help out as grips, gaffers, or with set design and thins like that.
  • If anyone was not at the meeting or didn't get a chance to write down their name and email to help out, John's contact details are j24.davies@student.qut.edu.au
  • Helping out with the third year productions will also hopefully be advertised on the brisfilm website

  • Student Film Screening:
  • As discussed at the previous meeting, the Guild Bar looks like the place we are going to hold our student film screening on the 25th July.
  • We will definitely book half the bar (it devides with a big curtain) but depending on the amount of people interested, we will see about booking the entire bar. However, if we DO book the entire bar we will need to pay for security and stuff... so that means FUNDRAISING!! Yay!!!
  • On the night of the screening, we will obvoiusly need help with sound, technology and of course selling tickets (for the raffles), so please let me or anyone of the executives know if you are willing to help out with this.
  • Cameron has offered to be around - possibly in Z6 - for half an hour on Friday 6th June for anyone who is interested to hand in hard copies of films to be screened (that is, dvd's, etc) So thanks Cameron, and people - GET YOUR MOVIES TO HIM!!
  • Also, it was discussed that there is a fileshare thing on the qut webmail for people to simply send through their clips. Perhaps send them to Heather at this stage, then we can sort them out. (president@brisfilm.com)
  • For people to get their films in for the screening, we set a deadline for Tuesday 22nd July, so you still have a while, but if you get them in ealry, chances are your film will be previewed in the ad.

  • Now about the AD!:
  • Reg came up with this idea of filming/editing an ad together to advertise for the screening. It will show varoius clips from varoius films that will be shown on the night. The plans with this ad is for it to be funny, sexy and EPIC. It will hopefully get played at the beginning of varoius lectures to get as many people as possible to come to the screening.
  • For the ad, we will be shooting little scenes over the holidays (after exams) to also put in the ad. So far, production roles are:
  • Director - Reg
  • Directors of Photography - Logan and Goldie
  • Storyboard - Sherlyn and Cameron
  • Editor - Logan and James - plus some others
  • James also said that he would look for some EPIC non-copyright music for us to use. So if anyone else finds any music like this, send it along to James (treasurer@brisfilm.com)

  • Next Meeting:
  • Because this week was our last week and we now head into exams, there will be no meetings for a while. So everyone stay tuned with the FTVS by checking out the website forums and emails, particularly because we will soon be organising the filming of our ad for the holidays.

  • Thanks again. Hope everyones exams go well and enjoy your holidays.

Kiri Groeneveld secretary@brisfilm.com(posted 31/5/2008)

  • Hi guys!
  • So, long time no speak - but here's a bit of a run down about the FTVS of late.

  • FTVS Screnning
  • On the 1st of August we held our long time coming Student Film Screening in the Loft at Z2. It went off relatively without a hitch and ended up being quite a good turn out. We saw many second year experimental films plus some first year films and others that we're made by students just in their free time. Thank you to everyone who participated and showcased a film or two.

  • 48 Hour Film Festival
  • Coming up is the 48 Hour film festival and our hope is to get together a team to enter this competition. It is held in October 24th to the 26th. For more information check out http://www.48hourfilm.com/brisbane/
  • Because of the way in which the competition is run, it would be awesome if we could get together a team soon and try and come up with some ideas for it (such as locations and available actors, etc).
  • Hope to see you all soon.
